Australia’s Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, has announced the delay in implementing the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS), following the Opposition’s backflip on its commitment and the slow progress in global action on climate change.
Mr Rudd stated that the implementation of the CPRS will be extended until after the conclusion of the current Kyoto commitment period, which finishes at the end of 2012. By this time the governments around the world will be required to make clear their commitment, and Australia will be in a better position to assess the level of global action on climate change before implementation of a CPRS in Australia.
